Monsoon in Paradise

At last, arriving at the destination Koh Samui

(Zur deutschen Version) Finally, yesterday evening we arrived at the Santiburi Beach Resort & Spa, where we are going to relax for a couple of days. Who has read my last two blogs already knows that the journey to the island was not without mishaps. But now we have arrived.

At arrival it is pitch dark, after 9pm. We get greeted with a cool cloth, smelling like flowers, a tasty fruit punch right in front of us.  Sitting on a cozy couch in the bar I fill out the registration form. There is no real reception, only two desks, but to sit here after the exhausting journey is much more comfortable.

That´s how I imagine paradise, maybe or something like that…

We get escorted to our garden villa by the beautifully, traditional dressed and very friendly employee. Do I really need to mention that our suitcases are already waiting in front of our villa? No, I don´t think so.

We can´t see much of the area, it is very dark, even if the paths and the pool are illuminated, but the light gets absorbed by the lush vegetation.

The nightly animal sounds are loud but not unpleasant. I like the tropical sounds, for me they belong to a destination like that; otherwise something would be missing for me. Frogs croak, insects buzz and other unidentified sounds mix to a lovely choir.P1160727

The young woman opens up our villa and explains the technical features of our new home. The villa with its two rooms is bigger than many apartments in Germany. A daybed with a narrow table and a coffee capsule machine form the sitting area together with the minibar and a small dining table on which a bowl with fresh fruits is waiting for us.

The TV can be seen from the day bed as well as from the bed. Illuminated built-in closets are equipped with bath robes, slippers, flip-flops for the beach and the safe. A desk separates the living area from the bedroom.

A door leads to the huge bathroom. Which of the two basins will I take? Left or right?

I decide for the right one, maybe because the body lotion and a small basket with toothbrushes, sewing kit and other nice amenities are placed there? Never ever! It´s only because of the small upholstered stool, that stands in front of the basin. This is clearly the female side, or what do you think?

A huge shower cabin (a whole family could shower here together…) and the toilet are separated from the bathroom by a frosted glass wall, in between the bath tub. Nicely placed on the rim are shower gels, shampoo and so on.

What is it that smells so good here? I look around and find a fragrant oil burner underneath the “male” basin. It could be the lovely smell of frangipani, but I really don´t know.

After a relaxing bath I go to bed, how cozy it is!

At the goldfish pond we take our breakfast, that has got something for every taste. We get greeted by Tanya the English and German speaking guest hostess. She might speak other languages as well, but I never asked.

She points out interesting things that we could do today or any other day.

We start with exploring the hotel and the garden. The vegetation is incredible; the gardeners do a real good job.P1170068

The beach: as soon as we decided on two deck chairs an employee hurries to bring us a small tablet with cold water and towels for the sun lounger and the hammock.

To relax, to do nothing, just listening to strange birds songs and the sound that the waves make while smoothly rolling on the golden beach, watching the palm leaves above me, is that paradise? Sure very similar.

Unfortunately nobody should take a swim in the warm waters of the ocean at the moment. A couple of weeks ago the poisonous box jellyfish was found here. Normally they don´t belong here.

We try yoga in the early afternoon, wow is that strenuous! I always thought that yoga is relaxing…

Afterwards we try out the huge swimming pool. Magnificent! What happens now? An employee comes around the pool with a small cart that contains ice cream and fresh fruit. That is nice! At 4 pm the hotel serves coffee, tea and cakes in the lobby, yummy! We really get pampered! This gets only topped by a pleasant massage in the Santiburi Spa. Yes!

We take our dinner in the beach restaurant; under a nearly full moon that looks through the palm leaves, our naked feet in the warm sand of the beach, listening to life jazz in the background. Why, yes, I think that must be paradise…

The next day brings rain, so much I have seen only very seldom. Pouring down like a torrent; the small stream that runs through the garden gets fuller and fuller. But the rain is warm and it forces us to relax and to read a book that I long wanted to read and never had the time. (Watch a short video!)

We decided deliberately to come here during the monsoon season. It is quiet here and as a “Northern German girl” I am used to the rain.

Big Buddha, Koh Samui

On a late afternoon we take a taxi and visit the “Big Buddha”, a landmark of Koh Samui. The steep stairs must be climbed on bare feet, so we are happy that it is not so hot anymore and the light of the setting sun gets dimmer.

The taxi driver brings us to another temple, the Nuan Na Rim with its 12 arms statue and the laughing Buddha.

During our visit there one of the monks beats the gong and with the stroke of the first gong all the dogs around start to howl. What an unearthly sound!

The time here flies. Our four days are over so fast and we have to say good bye. That is hard for us, how fast we got used to the caring and thoughtful service!

The journey back home goes smoothly, no mishaps. We will surely visit this paradise again!
